Online search has changed since ChatGPT's launch, which sparked the generative AI craze, according to Semrush research.
According to a recent report by Semrush and Statista, generative AI is gaining traction in search marketing, but if it hopes to become a "Google killer," it must gain the confidence of consumers. Despite this, GenAI's capabilities continue to attract digital marketers who see a significant increase in productivity and return on investment.
For over two decades, Google has dominated the internet search industry. When the generative AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT was released in November 2022, some predicted that the search engine's dominance would cease. Within five days, ChatGPT had over a million members, and in the months that followed, that number rose to five million.
According to the report "Online Search after ChatGPT," 13 million American adults are using generative AI as their main search engine in 2023; by 2027, that number is predicted to rise to over 90 million (registration needed).
But contrasting it with conventional search engine usage is like comparing the sun and a matchstick. Just in the United States, Google received 18 billion monthly visitors last year. It wasn't until April that ChatGPT's monthly traffic reached 10 million.
It's evident that they understand the main issue with Gen AI, which is reliability, even though many in the tech sector claim that consumers would be more receptive to it if they knew more about it.
