A signature Barbie doll honors stage and screen legend Rita Moreno, who is dressed in her famous black and gold Oscar gown created by the late, renowned Filipino fashion designer Pitoy Moreno.
The firm that made the famous Barbie doll, Mattel, recognized the award-winning American actress, dancer, and singer Rita Moreno.
The toy company honored the stage and film star with a unique Barbie doll as part of the Barbie Tribute Collection on December 11, the day before her 93rd birthday.
The Rita Moreno doll's attire was modeled after her well-known floor-length black and gold boatneck dress with striking gloves. Her elegant, vintage haircut is reminiscent of the golden age of Hollywood.
Known as the "Fashion Czar of Asia," the aforementioned outfit was designed by the late, well-known Filipino fashion designer Jose "Pitoy" Moreno. The latter presented it to her as a gift when she went to Manila in 1962 to shoot the action-packed war picture Cry of Battle.
When Rita accepted her 1962 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Anita in West Side Story, she wore the identical ball gown—complete with a Japanese obi skirt.
When the EGOT winner presented the Best Foreign Language Film prize on the Oscars red carpet in 2018, they once again wore the famous outfit.
Media attention was drawn to her chic reimagining of her iconic Oscars outfit, which she significantly altered by adding a bold necklace and making the neckline strapless.
According to Rita, she has had the Pitoy Moreno masterpiece in her closet for a long time. She decided to wear the gown again at the prestigious film festival 56 years later since it was a fortuitous day for her and the Oscars, which at the time celebrated their 90th anniversary.
Rita Moreno is the first Latina to receive the prestigious E.G.O.T. prize. She is one of only 21 performers to have won the Emmy for television, the Grammy for music, the Oscar for film, and the Tony for theater.
