The process of conducting laboratory tests involves the use of sterile and disposable plastics such as sample bottles, Petri dishes and pipette tips. According to the company, the Scientific Services department generates the most plastic waste for Scottish Water. This problem is even more serious since the plastics may contain some biological materials that require sterilization before disposal.
How can contaminated plastic be recycled?
Scottish Water has adopted GENERATIONS, a technology developed by Envetec Sustainable Technologies. The system disinfects and shreds selected laboratory plastics at the site where the waste is produced.
This is different from the traditional approach, which often involves autoclaving. Autoclaves use high-pressure steam to sterilize laboratory waste. After treatment, some materials still cannot be recycled and may have to go to landfill or be incinerated.
Since January 2026, Scottish Water’s Scientific Services team has processed about 72,000 sample bottles using GENERATIONS. These bottles should not all be considered waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill, because Scottish Water was already recycling uncontaminated bottles. Instead, the new system provides a more efficient way to handle large volumes and creates a route for some plastics affected by possible contamination.

According to the company and Envetec, the deployment is the first time that GENERATIONS have been used by any water utility in the world. If the method is successful in other waste streams, it will enable laboratories to decrease their reliance on both landfills and incinerators while maintaining high levels of safety.
