Minnesota's faculty shortage is affecting St. Peter Public Schools and districts around the state. According to a 2024 state study, the staffing shortfall has only worsened since the COVID-19 epidemic.
Annette Engeldinger, the principal of St. Peter High School, pointed out that the scarcity has gotten so bad that the district is unable to locate suitable teachers for some classes. Almost nine out of ten school districts acknowledge that the lack of replacements has greatly impacted them.
Due to a shortage of trained substitute teachers, St. Peter Public Schools is experimenting with flex learning times, a novel method of instruction that eliminates the requirement for an in-person teacher.
Students would use this software, which St. Peter High School is piloting this school year, as an e-learning day to reinforce the topics they have previously learned in class. The absent instructor would create e-learning tasks specifically for each learning session. After that, students would use their Chromebooks to do the homework on their own while being watched over by a staff member in the common area.
According to Engeldinger, the trial approach offers benefits in allowing continuity across lesson plans, even though students would not have the privilege of working with an in-person teacher. Due to the flex times, instructors who have pre-approved absences can prepare assignments for the day that expand on the lessons being taught, even if a replacement teacher is frequently not equipped to deliver a continuing lesson in the classroom.
