Experts Alert despite AI Transformation of Cybersecurity

Cyber experts express concerns about the rapid adoption of generative AI, despite its increasing potential to support security operations.

As CISOs embrace the technology internally to automate laborious procedures and boost productivity, generative AI is being included into security systems at a rapid rate.

However, data also indicates that cybersecurity experts are somewhat apprehensive about this spike in gen AI use. CISOs should be mindful of this when integrating gen AI into their security operations.

Gen AI has already been used by early adopter companies to enhance incident response and automate and speed up security processes. Additionally, security manufacturers are launching more and more AI-powered technologies that increase security analysts' productivity and provide a wide range of useful applications.

According to Peter Garraghan, professor at Lancaster University and CEO and CTO of AI security red-teaming company Mindgard, the widespread usage of Gen AI technologies in intrusion detection, anomaly detection, malware identification, and anti-fraud systems is proof of their value.

Garraghan informs CSO that AI is quite adept at automating time-consuming tasks and identifying and condensing commonalities in disparate data. Early users of AI developed their own log management tools, and more and more manufacturers are using AI features to facilitate this.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in security solutions is not new; for over ten years, security logs have been labeled using natural language processing (NLP) for text categorization, and machine learning has been employed in anti-malware software for almost as long.

In terms of accelerating the adoption of what has become known as AI-powered security, however, the introduction of Gen AI has been somewhat revolutionary for CISOs and vendors.
