Cybersecurity technologies in 2027 are being shaped by AI agents, quantum-safe encryption and attacks measured in minutes. Here is what enterprises should deploy first.
Cybersecurity technologies in 2027 are all about addressing one problem. Attackers take an average of 29 minutes to move laterally after initial access, however, the median amount of time to remediate vulnerabilities is 43 days. Spend is therefore being focused on identity for AI agents, quantum safe encryption, automation and exposure management.
Evidence for this was extremely consistent this year. CrowdStrike, Verizon, IBM and Gartner all highlighted speed was a key issue around securing digital infrastructure security. Below demonstrates the stats that each vendor reported and the math that we can do to understand the issue.
So why is speed the key factor?
There are 5 different clocks running for every enterprise.

This table explains everything. If you are taking 29 minutes to detect an attacker within your infrastructure, you have already lost the game. Whereas if you take 247 days to detect them then you are writing their obituary! The median time to patch is over 2000x longer than the average breach time. Although these don’t measure the same thing, they are showing the same trend.
From tracking breaches, CrowdStrike showed that the majority breaches were coming from trusted user accounts, SaaS applications and cloud infrastructure. This makes perimeter approaches fail. Additionally, AI enabled attackers increased their activities by 89% YoY.
"We’re in an AI arms race", says Adam Meyers, Director of Counter Adversary Operations at CrowdStrike. Furthermore, Verizon show that for the first time in their 19-year report, exploited vulnerabilities (31%) are now the main cause of breaches, overtaking stolen credentials.
Which emerging cybersecurity trends will shape 2027?
Across the research there were 5 consistent trends.
-
Identity for AI agents
-
Securing AI
-
Automation
-
Post-quantum cryptography
-
Automated exposure
Gartner mentioned AI agent governance in their 2026 Cybersecurity trends and in their 2027 technology trends, AI secure identity and automated exposure are included. Regulation will drive this issue. This is broken down below into sections. None of the sections depend on each other so you can begin with tackling the largest gap you have.
How will AI agents impact identity?
In their strategic technology trends for 2027 released in October, Gartner mention that 25% of enterprise breaches will come from AI agent abuse by 2028. This is due to uncontrolled machine privileges and legacy credentials. It’s a fairly simple reason.
However, humans are also playing their part. Gartner found that over 57% of employees use personal GenAI accounts for work and 33% admitted to adding sensitive data to unapproved tools. Verizon found that frequent use of AI by employees increased from 15% YoY to 45%. Finally, CrowdStrike found that attackers were injecting malicious prompts into GenAI tools at more than 90 organisations.
As a result of this Gartner advise that you need to ensure that your AI agent identities are being recorded, credentials are being issued and policies are in place to limit what the machine can do. As a result, your enterprise cybersecurity solutions in 2027 will include all of these features. You will want to ensure that you only purchase solutions that give you a live list of your AI agents (approved or not).
How much will securing AI cost?
Gartner predict that the AI security market will be almost $4.8 billion in 2027, up 68.7% from 2026 and almost $7.7 billion by 2028. The largest portion of this will be AI application security at almost $851 million, followed by AI usage control at $749 million.
This is interesting. The largest 2 portions are all about securing the AI that you have built and monitoring the AI that your employees are using. This aligns with the AI agent and shadow AI issues above. Gartner also expect that over half of successful attacks on AI agents will utilise poor access control and prompt injection by 2029.
Nothing exciting here. Both are common web security issues just with a new twist. Organisations with good access control will be ahead. When purchasing, ensure that you ask your vendor what portion of Gartner’s 4 sections (application security, usage control, governance platforms, gateways) your solution falls into. Ensure that they can prove they are enforcing access control on your AI agents.
Do advanced cybersecurity technologies like security AI pay off?
The most straightforward data comes from IBM's 2026 Cost of a Data Breach report. Globally, the average cost of a data breach has hit an all-time high of $4.99 million, up 12%, while the U.S. average hit $11.5 million. However, organizations who extensively adopted security AI and automation reduced these costs by $1.93 million and resolved incidents 65 days faster.
However, no other section of this guide has any quantifiable cost savings. This means you should invest in it, but shouldn't invest solely in it. Security leaders need to ensure they "balance people with technology" (Alex Michaels, Gartner). Though automation speeds up detection, ultimately, analysts will determine how to isolate the issue. With IBM reporting 247 days to identify and contain a breach on average, even teams with high levels of automation still have some improvement to do.
Why should post-quantum encryption be on my 2027 budget?
NIST published the final version of IR 8547 on 27 October 2026, almost two years after the draft was released. The new plan states that quantum vulnerable public key algorithms such as RSA and Elliptic Curve Cryptography will be deprecated after 2030 and banned after 2035. They've also included an alternative to the Lattice Based ML-KEM algorithm called HQC, though they are still working on a standard. ML-KEM-768 remains the suggested default.
Gartner are more forthright stating that due to quantum advancements, current asymmetric cryptography will be insecure by 2030.
The real reason to invest in this in 2027 is the long lasting data. Any data encrypted at the moment that needs to stay confidential after 2030 can be noted now and decrypted. The first goal will be to take stock of where RSA and Elliptic curve cryptography are being used, in Certificates, VPNs, Firmware Signing and Embedded Devices. As digital infrastructure is being designed to last a decade, you need to be flexible with your algorithms. You want to be able to change them easily.
Are we automating our patches?
We need to. Verizon's 2026 DBIR showed that 31% of breaches were due to exploitation of a vulnerability. The average time taken to remediate a vulnerability increased from 32 days to 43 days. This is due to the increase in vulnerabilities, including the must patch issues in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. This data doesn't reflect the increase in AI assisted vulnerability research.
Gartner's 2027 list states you should invest in automated exposure remediation. You should measure how effective your remediation is. This is the correct metric to measure. If your teams are remediating hundreds of low risk issues, but there's one internet facing issue that's been open for weeks then you're not secure, you're just busy. Of all the new cybersecurity trends, this is the easiest to audit.
How will new regulations affect enterprise cyber security solutions?
Since the EU Cyber Resilience Act came into effect on the 11th September 2026, manufacturers of connected devices must report an initial alert within 24 hours and a full report within 72 hours of discovering an actively exploited vulnerability or serious incident to ENISA's single platform. The main requirements come into effect on the 11th December 2027, with fines of up to €15 million or 2.5% of worldwide annual turnover.
This means your asset management, triage and incident reporting has to be completed within 24 hours. This can also trigger the requirement to report under GDPR or NIS2.
What should you do?
Based on our findings, we believe the following steps should be taken:
-
Implement a machine identity solution to ensure all your AI agents are registered, with short lived credentials and logging.
-
Prioritise based on risk, using a patching solution to help prioritise. Measure how long it takes to remediate vulnerabilities.
-
Use security AI & automation in your SOC. IBM reported a savings of $1.93 million.
-
Cryptographic inventory, meaning you have a plan for NIST's 2030 and 2035 dates.
-
A reporting solution
Most of these actions can be seen in the table above. Your 2027 security stack should be purchased based on measurable metrics. The cybersecurity technology that survives scrutiny will be the kind that moves one of those numbers.
