Nintendo generative AI used creatively emphasizes IP issues

Nintendo has offered its thoughts on the use of generative artificial intelligence in video game production.

Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of Nintendo, was questioned about the company's AI-related projects at a shareholder Q&A. Furukawa said that while generative AI can be used creatively, there are also intellectual property rights issues linked to its use.

One of the hottest topics in the video game industry right now is artificial intelligence and its applications. While some studios are bragging about AI-generated NPCs or AI-driven level creation, others are worried about how it might affect jobs, especially in the areas of performance, art, and quality assurance.

Players and producers have criticized generative AI thus far for a variety of reasons, including moral dilemmas, legal concerns, and AI's difficulties in producing material that people genuinely love. For example, Keywords Studios made an internal attempt to develop a fully AI-controlled experimental game. Investors were informed by Keywords that AI was "unable to replace talent" when the game failed.

Nintendo is considering using new technology while ensuring its unique value remains intact. Nintendo is getting ready to reveal and ship the successor system to the Switch.”

As competitors to Nintendo's video game consoles fully commit to AI, the company has taken a mixed stance. Microsoft is creating an Xbox AI chatbot to help with support tasks like game refunds, console troubleshooting, and answering questions about error codes.

Asad Qizilbash, head of product at PlayStation Studios and head of PlayStation Productions, commented on AI in video games, stating that younger players prioritize "personalization across everything."
