There has apparently been an internal outcry at Microsoft following the dismissal of the diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) team. The head of the program has now criticized the corporation for having "changing business needs."
Business Insider was able to receive an email that revealed Microsoft's decision. According to the email, the DEI internal staff no longer believed that diversity was necessary for business operations.
The team leader informed hundreds of employees via email that the global systems-change initiative for DEI projects is not as critical as it was in 2020. According to the email, the team was let go on July 1st due to changing company needs. How many people were affected is unknown.
Following the tragic death of George Floyd in 2020, a number of prominent companies, Microsoft included, made a commitment to strengthen their diversity initiatives. This pledge came in the wake of momentous protests sparked by Floyd's untimely demise at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.
By 2025, Microsoft aims to double the proportion of black leaders in the organization. It's unclear how this claim is progressing.
The former DEI team leader, according to the leaked emails, feels that Microsoft has given up on the DEI ideas that were promoted during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations. Among other things, the plans included investing $150 million in DEI programs.
Microsoft has clarified that its commitments to diversity and inclusion remain unwavering despite recent events. According to spokesperson Jeff Jones, the company's dedication to this cause remains unchanged, and they are steadfast in their efforts to advance these initiatives.
Regarding the alleged termination of the employees, the statement remained silent. The corporation declared its intention to let go of 10,000 employees last year.
