Is the Majority Always Right?" Season 2 Explores Deadly Challenges and U.S. Elections

Season 2 of Squid Game will premiere soon, and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explains which aspect of the show is similar to the US presidential election.

There is a lot of excitement with the recent publication of the trailer for Squid Game season 2. The Korean thriller is the most watched program on Netflix ever and has become a global cultural phenomenon. The bloodthirsty reality game's second season introduces new regulations, such as providing the competitors with additional options. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the designer of Squid Game, also likens this to a democratic election.

Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed how the second season of Squid Game is coming out immediately after Donald Trump won the US presidential election in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. With the trailer suggesting that it will cause division among them, the program reintroduces the idea that the competitors in the fake game show have the option to exit the competition by selecting either X or O. The fact that people are making boundaries everywhere you look, whether by generation, class, religion, nationality, or color, is what drove Hwang to call the Squid Game US election "the ultimate O-X event."

The show's author relates this to contemporary democracy and aims to examine what occurs when a quiet majority coerces a substantial minority into doing what they want. Hwang said that although everyone has the right to vote in their democratic nation, the ruling party controls the government. Therefore, he also wanted to ask, "Is the majority always right?"

In September 2021, the first season of Squid Game was made available on Netflix. In the Korean-set program, 456 regular individuals who are struggling financially agree to play a series of kid-friendly activities in order to enter to win ₩45.6 billion. The catch is that the ultra-rich elites watch the games for fun, and the losers in each game die. Class division, consumerism, and the growth of torture porn entertainment were among the topics covered in the program. On December 26, the second season will debut on Netflix.
