“The pressures faced by the oil and gas industry is exactly why I focus on developing technologies that don’t just improve performance incrementally, but actually redefine what reliability looks like at scale,” says Emiliano Schifrin, Product Manager at North American Automation (NAM) in Houston.

He adds: “My goal has always been to create solutions that raise the bar for the entire sector, not just solve problems for one company. My work on this actuator is about strengthening the competitiveness of U.S. energy operations as a whole.

“By reducing downtime and maintenance costs across hundreds of systems, we’re freeing up capital that can be reinvested into infrastructure, innovation, and jobs. I see my role as contributing to the kind of practical technological progress that supports long-term economic growth and energy security for the United States.”

Through disciplined strategic product management and executive leadership, Schifrin has made a name for himself as an expert, all while guiding his patented hydraulic plug valve actuator from concept to market dominance. His expertise, that led to such an innovation, has become the cornerstone of a North American industrial automation firm’s explosive growth while exerting measurable influence across the broader midstream and well-site automation sector — and delivering tangible benefits to the U.S. economy.

Before being a young innovator as he is known today, Schifrin was first a passionate creative. He was born in Argentina, where he grew up involved in different creative hobbies. He recounts his childhood with a note of nostalgia: “From a young age, I was passionate about strategy games, building things, and over time I got involved in different creative hobbies,” he says.

“That helped reshape how I think and how I work. I studied music production—I feel that's creation. I also explored painting and art. I really like art. When I was young, I wanted to become an architect.”

This dream proved one thing: Schifrin’s interests didn’t exist on their own. Instead, they were interconnected elements that soon became the foundation of his expertise in business and technology.

He recalls: “I've always seen how people build businesses from scratch. Eventually, I realized all those interests were connected: creativity, strategy, and taking an idea to make it a real thing.”

As a result, Schifrin grew up to love his work. While being an architect didn’t pan out, he instead shone as a product manager, engineer, and innovator. He loves the idea of creation: “There is nothing better than starting from basically nothing to connecting components to bring a stray thought into reality.”

Schifrin’s tendency to be a multi-hyphenate creative also shone in his work, where he prioritized connecting different disciplines to create something new.

It was in Argentina that Schifrin’s journey started. He began working in product design and engineering in food processing machinery in 2014, and then served in the oil and gas sector in 201. Later on, he transitioned into the oil and gas sector, quickly advancing from product designer to both product developer and project leader. All this experience deepened his expertise in product management, new technologies, and complex projects. He was soon steeped in experience in mechanical and automation solutions.

Finally, after years of hard work, he relocated to Houston, Texas, joining North American Automation as a Product Manager. Here, Schifrin’s innate talent was put to good use and was honed even further.

Today, he oversees the full cycle of a product, manages field deployments, leads engineering projects, monitors market trends, conducts competitive analyses, and supervises cross-functional teams of engineers and project managers alike.

This holistic approach, which blends technical depth with strategic foresight, is rooted in his earlier experience as a Product Developer and Project Leader at Moto Mecanica Innovación in Argentina, where he championed agile prototyping methods that dramatically shortened development cycles.

Schfrin says: “My experience in Argentina taught me that long, rigid development cycles often waste time and resources. I championed agile prototyping methods there because they allowed us to build, test, and validate solutions much faster while staying closely connected to real operational needs. This experience shaped my belief that successful innovation requires both deep technical understanding and clear strategic foresight working together from day one.”

Schifrin is one to enjoy the challenges of his work. While his job couldn’t be defined as easy, he faces each and every project head-on, saying: “One of the biggest challenges—and one I enjoy—is the constant pressure to stay at the forefront of technology. If we fall behind, we risk years of development on a solution that becomes obsolete. It requires continuous awareness of emerging technologies, innovation, and competitive developments.” Schifrin advocates lifelong learning in his industry, and his work demonstrates his commitment.

Schfrin’s commitment goes beyond just doing his job. He is also a talented leader who has honed his skills to a high level of excellence. As a manager, he has a holistic understanding of the project development lifecycle, enabling him to connect technical, operational, and strategic components across the board. He’s on top of the news, trends, and market changes, which makes him the person to look to when you need different technologies that could be applied to the oil and gas industry.

He has a unique approach to his expertise. While there’s no doubt that he has a competitive advantage from being based in Houston, one of the world's major energy hubs, he is also fueled by his passion for his creation. He loves transforming his ideas into real, tangible products that leave an impact.

Schfrin’s expertise is also evident in how he manages his professional and personal life. He wants to be trusted, and makes sure to cultivate that trust: “I keep interactions with clients very direct. I'd like to be viewed as a reliable and responsible professional,” he says.

“Someone clients can trust to take ownership of complex challenges. If they have a problem, they can say, "We can trust Emiliano and his team to solve it.”

Because of this reliability, as a professional, Schifrin makes sure to manage client expectations. He never overpromises, nor does he under-deliver. He’s used to projects being in demand, with results needed as soon as possible, but he believes in taking the time to craft and hone the project first, especially with new technology around every corner. He notes: “Managing expectations is very important. Overall, the experience is positive. Not every customer is familiar with automation, so we work closely at the beginning—providing training, support, and guidance during the transition.”

Over the years, Schifrin became known in his industry. He helped implement efficient, flexible, and well-organized structures that significantly improved service quality and execution. He combined early prototyping, iterative testing, and continuous feedback from field operations, enabling the entire team to identify issues early, reduce rework, and deliver more reliable solutions. He’s intent on bridging the learning curve gap between the start of system operations and a fully integrated structure.

Schifrin says: “When I started at this company, one of my main contributions was introducing a development approach based on prototyping and validation. Rather than rigid, long cycles (like in my previous engineering work, where projects could take four or five years), we adopted an agile manner—build, test, learn, improve. We saw a huge difference in the time needed to bring technology to validation and deployment.”

As a professional, he focuses on how to improve systems and solve problems, becoming hands-on with solutions that are creatively developed and collaborative.

One of the solutions that serves as part of Schifrin’s impact is the patented Valve Actuator Device for Fluid Flow Control. It stands out when placed with conventional actuators, which are

high-pressure plug valve applications that frequently suffer from excessive torque demands and premature reliability failures. These are long-standing pain points that Schifrin’s expertise sought to correct.

Instead of prematurely failing when pushed to more use, Schifrin’s valve has an unmatched durability that can withstand extreme conditions. Because of this durability, Schifrin managed to lower long-term maintenance costs.

Schifrin says: “One of the biggest advantages of this actuator is its field-repair-friendly design. Technicians can service the units directly on-site with minimal downtime and without needing highly specialized tools or equipment. This was a deliberate choice during development because we knew that in real operations, every hour of downtime carries a very high cost.

“This wasn’t just a theoretical solution on paper — it was thoroughly tested and proven by operators in the field. Many companies have now deployed the actuator across their sites, and the feedback has been consistent: the technology performs reliably under real-world conditions where previous solutions often struggled.

“Operators using the actuator have seen significantly extended service intervals compared to legacy systems, along with much faster return-to-service times when maintenance is required. Because the design allows quick on-site repairs, they’re able to get systems back online faster, which directly reduces both operational costs and safety risks in high-pressure environments.”

This actuator quickly became part of flagship technology in the company. Over 1,000 units were acquired, rapidly adopted and sustainably scaled, until over 150 systems are making use of it. This is not just notable in his company, but it leaves a positive impact in the entire industry — and as a result, the whole country. Schifrin’s leadership in iterative prototyping, continuous field feedback loops, and cross-disciplinary collaboration was instrumental in moving technology as a whole from prototype to production at speed — a process he introduced and refined within the organization.

Schifrin says: “We've helped demonstrate that automation can simultaneously improve safety, environmental performance, and operational efficiency. By successfully deploying systems in these environments, we've built confidence across companies to adopt similar solutions.” By delivering a more reliable, lower-maintenance automation component, his work is helping raise performance standards across the entire U.S. oil and gas automation industry.

The actuator isn’t the only thing in Schifrin’s repertoire. His inventive portfolio extends further, with several provisional patents demonstrating his forward-thinking approach. He was part of the invention of a sweep detection system, an automated plug catcher flushing, an autogrease system, and a scale system for oil & gas operations.

His relentless innovation in his work is one thing he takes pride in, saying: “I'm deeply passionate about innovation and constantly looking for more efficient or smarter ways to perform operations. My main goal is to help modernize operational practices through technology, making the industry safer, more sustainable, and more efficient.”

This goal was apparent to many people around Schifrin, including Adrian Bucciarelli, who worked at Digito, who recalls: “From the very beginning, I noticed Emiliano’s genuine curiosity about technology and his rare ability to grasp complex processes and simplify them.

“In the field of automation, he not only mastered the technical tools but also possessed a business mindset that allowed him to propose truly useful and practical solutions. I watched him evolve with every project, always striving to go a step further.”

He adds: “Witnessing that process from start to finish—from the initial idea to the patent—speaks volumes about Emiliano’s technical ability and rigor.”

Ariel Vanzino, a project leader at Digito, also remembers Schifrin well for his work: “I became familiar with his skills while working together on projects that required a high level of automation,” he says.

“We worked on developing new technologies, and Emiliano was incredibly capable at handling everything from the initial project phase and engineering design through to the final commissioning and field implementation of the technology.”

Beyond the professional level, he also commends Schifrin personally: “Emiliano has treated me in the best possible way. When we shared an office and worked on projects together, he always prioritized learning from my experience. On a personal level, he is someone you can count on for whatever you need. He was a key figure in bringing technologies developed in Argentina to a market new to us: the US market.”

This kind of philosophy in approaching both the people he works with and the projects themselves is central to how Schifrin executes his work. As it stands, he believes that innovation and technology don’t exist in a vacuum.

Instead, it must be used to further people’s lives and development. He says: “Technology should serve operations and people—it doesn't need to complicate their work. I believe in building solutions that are reliable, transparent, and designed with real operational challenges in mind.”

As he continues to invent and innovate throughout his career, he’s also sharing as much knowledge as possible, especially with emerging professionals and peers, saying:  “I've mentored coworkers. followed them from when they started, helped improve their skills, and supported their career goals.”

With crafted expertise, years of experience, and innate skills, Schifrin has already left an impact on his greater community, and there is no doubt that there will only continue to be more innovation coming from him in the future.
