Airtel Africa has picked London for its $10 billion Airtel Money IPO. Find out what's behind the decision and what it means for investors.

Airtel Africa has confirmed that it will list its mobile money business, Airtel Money, on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in the second half of 2026. The move is expected to unlock the value of one of Africa's fastest-growing fintech platforms while giving the company access to a wider pool of international investors.

The planned initial public offering (IPO) is expected to value Airtel Money at around $10 billion, with the company aiming to raise nearly $1.5 billion. Citigroup has been appointed as the lead underwriter for the offering.

London becomes the preferred destination for global investors

The company had earlier explored other listing options, but rising geopolitical tensions and higher costs linked to the Iran conflict pushed it to choose London instead. The LSE offers stronger access to global institutional investors and a well-established market for large international listings.

Explaining the decision, Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar said, "We believe a London listing will provide access to a broad international investor base and support our ambition to unlock the long-term value of one of Africa's leading fintech platforms."

Why is Airtel Money attracting so much attention?

Airtel Money has continued to grow rapidly across Africa. The platform now serves 56.5 million active users in 14 countries. During the latest quarter, it processed $61.4 billion in transactions, while revenue nearly $404 million. EBITDA also rose to $198 million, reflecting a strong profit margin.

East Africa remains its biggest market, but the company is also seeing faster adoption in Francophone Africa and Nigeria as more people shift from cash to digital payments.

Despite the strong performance of its fintech business, Airtel Africa warned that its overall profit margins could face short-term pressure because higher energy and logistics costs, driven by the Iran conflict, have increased operating expenses. Even so, the telecom group reported higher first-quarter revenue and profits, supported by strong demand for mobile services, digital technologies, AI and favorable currency movements.

According to Business Fortune, the funds raised through the IPO are expected to help Airtel Money to expand its services and strengthen its presence in key markets such as Kenya, and compete more aggressively in Africa's fast-growing digital payments industry. If successful, the listing could also boost London's appeal for major international IPOs while highlighting the growing importance of Africa's fintech sector in global financial markets.
