Wind Steel Offshore Investing USA

The investment will bolster US government strategies for offshore wind development

A subsidiary of the JSW Group in India, JSW Steel USA, plans to upgrade its Baytown, Texas factory with an investment of $110 million. The goal of the investment is to boost the production of premium steel plates. This is crucial for achieving 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy generation in the US by 2030.

The investment will bolster US government strategies for offshore wind development by introducing advanced machinery and sustainable technologies. To promote lasting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals and reduce the dependency on imports in the US infrastructure and renewable sectors, the upgrade includes improvements to the Plate Mill. By sourcing steel slab production from Ohio, JSW USA intends to increase the scope of its "Made in USA" portfolio, focusing on specialized industries such as offshore wind structures and hydrocarbon pipelines.

The decision comes after a previous $145 million investment at another US site, Mingo Junction, in clean steel processes, which is anticipated to be finished by FY26. The importance of the investment in strengthening US-Indian relations in vital industries was emphasized by Rob Simon, CEO of JSW Steel USA.
