China's growing clean industry investments are shifting global manufacturing, creating new opportunities for emerging economies while putting pressure on Europe to accelerate its green transition.
China Clean Industrial Investment is gaining momentum, with the country securing 23 of the 36 major clean industrial projects that received financing worldwide over the past year. The development underlines China's increasing superiority over Europe and America as the world's emerging economies receive more investments for manufacturing, clean energy and sustainable industrial processes.
As per research by Mission Possible Partnership (MPP), these investments could transform the landscape of manufacturing, workforce and energy supply chains around the globe.
China Takes the Lead in Clean Industrial Investment
The Chinese managed to secure over €40 billion investments for 23 new clean industrial plants, which is indicative of their prominent role in the global energy shift. Additionally, China houses 49% of all clean industrial plants either built or under construction.
Government backing, renewable energy production and the increasing demand for alternative fuel sources have assisted China in developing its manufacturing abilities. The country is responsible for over 90% of worldwide methanol production capacity and more than 40% of aluminium production capacity.
Chinese influence is also spreading to the international marketplace. China’s clean technology suppliers are helping in developing renewable energy projects in Southeast Asia, Africa and elsewhere. Such influence can further bolster Chinese power on both economic and geopolitical levels.
Emerging Economies Overtake Europe in New Projects
The growth of the industrial sunbelt is creating yet another aspect of investment in clean industries. The nations in Africa, Asia and Latin America are employing their renewable energy sources to attract investments in industries.
During the past year, there were six projects in emerging markets that raised finance worth €4.7 billion more than the €4.3 billion in developed markets.
Kenya is constructing the first geothermal-powered plant to manufacture environmentally friendly fertilizers in Africa. In addition, Paraguay has managed to secure funds for cleaner fertilizer manufacturing. South Africa has also received investments for manufacturing sustainable fuels using captured carbon dioxide and renewable energy.
The MPP has also noted an additional 281 clean industrial projects that are currently being developed in emerging economies.
Can Europe Rebuild Its Clean Industry Position?
Europe is taking initiatives to increase its competitiveness in the industry. The European Union has made its Clean Industry Deal initiative which started from February 2025 and is estimated to mobilize more than €100 billion for clean manufacturing and energy savings.
Industrial Accelerator Act is yet another attempt at accelerating manufacturing approvals and stimulating demand for European-made low-carbon goods.
Moreover, Europe continues to have considerable manufacturing capacity. In terms of manufacturing electric cars and wind turbines, Europe has surplus production capacity compared to its demands, while heat pumps' production capacity is almost thrice its demands.
However, the question of financing continues to pose a huge problem. The MPP is following over 800 potential clean industrial projects worth almost €4.3 trillion that lack financing. Proper policies, better consumer commitments and quicker decisions on investment will play a vital role in making Europe competitive.
Thus, Business Fortune believes that Europe must accelerate clean industrial investment, strengthen manufacturing capabilities and secure financing to remain globally competitive.
