IBM Unveils $30B R&D Drive to Advance Quantum and AI Future

IBM has allocated $30 billion for research and development over the next five years to support advanced computing, including mainframes and quantum technology, as part of a massive $150 billion investment plan in the United States.

Arvind Krishna, the chairman and CEO of IBM, said that technology defines the future rather than merely creating it, emphasizing the company's ambition to lead the way in advanced computing and artificial intelligence.

The statement coincides with President Donald Trump's intensified calls on businesses to increase domestic investment, especially in manufacturing.

Even though some of these projects were already underway, big corporations like Apple, Nvidia, and Hyundai have announced large expenditures in the United States since Trump returned to power in January.

Trump proposed broad tariff hikes earlier this month to encourage American businesses to reshore their manufacturing. Heavy tariffs on Chinese imports are still in place, even if many of the taxes have subsequently been suspended because of worries about possible economic damage.

In their statement, IBM emphasized its steadfast dedication to supporting American innovation and improving economic opportunities both at home and abroad.

The 114-year-old company, which lags behind digital giants like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, also highlighted its dominance in quantum computing, where it runs the biggest fleet of such computers globally.
