Concept cars are frequently crazy, silly, and slightly insane. However, only a few come close to matching the Cadillac OpenSpace motorhome's degree of luxury.
General Motors Design has decided it's time to reveal the digital layers of this design, two years after it originally teased us with hazy information. Let's examine the OpenSpace's features, why GM could be reviving it, and what it might be implying about the direction of luxury automobiles.
The futuristic InnerSpace coupe, the one-seater PersonalSpace flying car, the six-seater SocialSpace van, and the OpenSpace were the first four Cadillac autonomous ideas to be promoted as the biggest.
Cadillac wants the OpenSpace to have Level 5 driving autonomy, which means that it could go from point A to point B without a driver's input or attention. And when it gets there? At that point, things start to become fascinating and promise to be anything but typical.
In addition to transporting its passengers to their destination, this recreational EV is intended to fit in with its environment. Cadillac gave it a reflecting surface that softens the car's form and lets the interior areas blend in perfectly with the surroundings. In certain areas, a car like this might definitely stand out like a sore thumb. A great touch is the careful consideration given to making it blend in.
It's important to remember that the OpenSpace is still essentially just a collection of conceptual sketches. Level 5 autonomous driving in regular production vehicles is still years, if not decades, away. With its enormous size and opulent features, incorporating it into something like this feels more like building a self-driving little home than a car. Even though this strategy would not excite conventional auto aficionados, it would be a highly upscale mode of transportation when completely autonomous cars ultimately become available.
