Red Hat OpenStack platform integration by Ericsson IMS increases Spark's network resilience

IMS Enhances

In order to expand its IMS infrastructure and fortify network resilience, Ericsson and Spark NZ, the biggest telecommunications and digital services provider in New Zealand, successfully deployed Ericsson IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) on the Red Hat OpenStack Platform in Spark's South Island Network Data Center.

For Spark's consumers throughout New Zealand, the rollout represents a major improvement in the dependability and functionality of mobile phone and video calling services.

With the addition of this new Ericsson IMS node to the ones already present in its two North Island Network Data Centers, Spark is expanding its IMS infrastructure. Since 2015, Spark has used the network resilience of Ericsson's IMS technology to deliver these services.

By the end of the year, Spark plans to transfer its existing Ericsson IMS nodes to the same platform in order to create a strong, cohesive network. With this migration, any single node will be able to handle the entire traffic load for the entire country, even in the case that one or two nodes are compromised.

The South Island IMS deployment was the first Red Hat OpenStack Platform deployment in New Zealand to go live and be fully operational. It represents a shift from multiple custom stacks to one affordable alternative. This transition not only reduces operating costs but also provides Spark with a dependable and scalable solution that enhances its ability to provide its customers with an impeccable experience. Another feature of the new system that ensures a better user experience with fewer network delays is lower latency.
