Looking for cheaper fuel before you hit the road? Fuel prices on Google Maps are making it easier for UK drivers to compare nearby petrol and diesel prices and find a better deal before filling up.

Finding cheaper fuel could soon become much easier for UK drivers as fuel prices on Google Maps are set to appear alongside nearby petrol stations from Thursday.

This new feature will use information from the Fuel Finder website of the government, enabling them to look up petrol and diesel prices while locating fuel stations using Google Maps. Considering that diesel prices have just crossed £2 per liter, it couldn’t be more apt a time for the families suffering from increased travel costs.

A new way to hunt for cheaper fuel

Fuel Finder already receives price information from about 99% of UK petrol stations.  It is important to note that prices in petrol stations need to be updated every 30 minutes after any change occurs, providing drivers with up-to-date information.

Google Maps is especially important in this case as it is used by around 77% of British adults for navigation, according to Ofcom. The feature could therefore bring fuel price comparison to millions of drivers who may not use specialist apps. The government estimates that the development could save households with cars around £40 a year by making cheaper stations easier to find.

The president of the AA, Edmund King, described the step as “massive progress” and noted that increased visibility of pump prices would help to increase competition among fuel retailers.

How accurate are Google Maps fuel prices?

That question matters because fuel prices can change quickly. Google promises that it will independently verify the information and will show a price only when it is certain that the price is up-to-date.  However, some industry experts have raised concerns about gaps in the government data. PetrolPrices director Clare Lafferty said some stations had not registered with Fuel Finder, while others were not consistently updating their prices on time.

So, How accurate are Google Maps fuel prices? They should provide a useful guide, but drivers may still want to check the price at the pump before filling up.

The change comes as the UK fuel market remains under pressure from global oil supply disruptions. Diesel prices recently reached 200.11p per litre, while petrol stood at 174.89p, according to RAC figures.

What could this mean for fuel retailers?

Greater transparency could expose large differences between nearby petrol stations. Retailers that offer lower prices may become easier to discover, while those maintaining higher prices could face greater pressure to compete.

The feature also gives Google Maps another practical role beyond navigation. It joins Waze and specialist services such as PetrolPrices, the AA and RAC Fuel Watch in helping drivers compare fuel costs.

As Business Fortune observes, Fuel costs in Google Maps can become an everyday feature for people while planning trips as digital tools become more connected with their household expenses. If data coverage improves, drivers may eventually be able to make fuel decisions as easily as choosing the fastest route.
