Freedon Habba in Bengaluru is set to give Independence Day a colourful new twist as Vidhana Soudha opens its precincts to a day long public celebration on August 15. The first edition of Freedom Habba will run from 11 am to 10 pm, bringing together cultural performances, food, crafts, children's activities, exhibitions, a parade and an evening music festival.

Vidhana Soudha Turns Into a Celebration Hub

Unlike a traditional Independence Day ceremony centered on speeches and formal proceedings, Freedom Habba is designed as a public carnival. Around 40 contingents are expected to participate in an India Parade showcasing regional cultures, music, traditional attire and folk performances.

The event will also feature a Makkala Mela, a Living Museum of the freedom movement, Karnataka Freedom Path, Constitution Square and a 200 foot Freedom Wall where visitors can express what freedom means to them.

The organisers have also planned more than 120 food, craft and lifestyle stalls as part of the Soul Sante Festival. Entry is free, but visitors require prior registration and a valid government issued ID.

Krishna Byre Gowda Shares the Vision

Minister for Bengaluru Development Krishna Byre Gowda said the celebration should move beyond simply observing Independence Day. “Independence Day should be experienced not just as a ceremony, but as a celebration we create together.”

The festival's theme, “Namma Ooru. Nimma Ooru. Ellara Bengaluru,” reflects the city's multicultural character. Bengaluru is home to communities from across Karnataka and the rest of India, and the event aims to bring that diversity into the spotlight.

Byre Gowda also described cultural diversity as a strength, saying, “I don’t see cultural diversity as a problem. I see it as a richness of our society.”

Music, Food and Fireworks Await

The evening programme will turn the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha into a concert stage. The Freedom Collective Music Festival will feature artistes including Sanjith Hegde, Brodha V, Siddhartha Belamannu, Varijashree Venugopal, Harish Sivaramakrishnan, Praveen Rao, MD Pallavi, Nakul Abhyankar and Bruce Lee Mani. The celebration is expected to conclude with a fireworks finale.

Children at the Heart of Freedom Habba

A major focus of the event is children. Guided tours will give youngsters and families an opportunity to explore Vidhana Soudha, while storytelling, creative workshops, quizzes and interactive activities aim to make India's freedom movement more engaging.
