Google says the process also includes liveness checks and other security measures to help defend against fake photos and AI-generated deepfake videos.

“We always recommend that you set up more than one option. Selfie is just the newest option available for users,” said Claire Forszt, Product Manager for Google Identity and Engagement, explaining that the feature is designed for situations where users lose access to their trusted device.

Could this become the easiest way to recover your Google account?

Setting up the feature takes only a few minutes. Users can visit Security & sign-in in their Google Account settings, choose Selfie video, and follow the guided steps. If a computer doesn't have a camera, the process can be completed using a smartphone by scanning a QR code. The saved video can also be deleted at any time, and Google says it is used only for sign-in unless users choose to share it for additional purposes.

At launch, the feature is available only for personal Google Accounts. It does not currently support Google Workspace accounts, children's accounts, or accounts enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program. Google also continues to recommend enabling multiple recovery options, including backup codes and recovery contacts, for stronger account security.
