Cyclone Warning Issued in Andhra Pradesh, Farmers Advised to Take Precautions

Farmers in Andhra Pradesh are advised to protect crops, livestock, and harvests as a severe cyclone nears.

A deep depression over the South Andaman Sea is expected to grow into a major cyclone within the next two days so Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister Kinjarapau Atchannaidu has advised farmers to stay alert.

Under extremely favorable conditions in the Bay of Bengal the minister warned that the system is nearing west-northwest and advised district and agricultural authorities to stay alert and take necessary steps.

Atchannaidu stated at a review meeting with officials on Tuesday that field-level agricultural officers need to visit village networks and advise farmers to safeguard standing crops harvested produce and livestock. Also he specified that those who have already completed paddy harvesting should move their yield to safer locations without delay. As well the government is providing tarpaulin sheets for free and district administrations have been instructed to supply them quickly to all farmers to shield their harvest from rain and winds.

Meanwhile the cyclone is expected a major impact on Rayalaseema and North Coastal Andhra region. The minister requested officials to provide frequent weather updates and step up measures. Atchannaidu indicated that preventive actions are essential to avoid crop damages during this serious period since agricultural operations are under way through the state.

The India Meteorological Department has asked fishermen who are at sea right now to immediately return to the land due to the worsening sea conditions. Teams responsible for disaster board have instructed to stay alert and keep monitor growths. Atchannaidu specified all departments have to work together to ensure that general public and farmers experience no problems with the system methods.
