Gemini AI is currently available in Chrome for Mac and Windows users in the US, with plans to extend its functionality and integration across Google apps and mobile devices.
Google will start incorporating Gemini into its Chrome browser for US users on Thursday, just days after a federal court rescued the corporation from a forced separation in an antitrust dispute.
Alphabet owns Big Tech, which won a rare success in its battle against U.S. antitrust regulators earlier this month when a Washington court decided that Google would not be compelled to sell the browser. However, the judge also ordered Google to share data with competitors to increase competition in online search. Google said in a blog post on Thursday that desktop users of Mac and Windows computers in the United States who have English selected as their language will be able to use the Gemini AI models add-on for Chrome. Gemini will also soon be included in Apple's iOS Chrome app.
In the upcoming weeks, Gemini in Chrome will be made available to companies through Google Workspace and on US mobile devices. Additionally, Gemini in Chrome was further integrated with other Google apps, like Calendar, YouTube, and Maps, by the internet giant.
In the upcoming months, Google plans to provide Gemini in Chrome with agentic skills that can carry out multi-step activities. Among other improvements, it will be able to identify previously visited URLs and allow content summarization from several sources. The integration is also an attempt to compete with other agentic browser providers, such as Perplexity, which made an unsolicited, all-cash bid of $34.5 billion for Chrome in August. Comet, its AI-powered browser, can carry out specific tasks for users.
Judge Amit Mehta's decision from earlier in September permits Google to maintain control over Chrome and the Android mobile operating system, except for some exclusive agreements with browser developers and device manufacturers. As a key component of its supremacy in online search, Google can keep paying partners like Apple to display its search engine.
According to a Bloomberg News story from August, Apple has contacted Google about using Gemini AI to update the Siri voice assistant.
