Bringing more than 580 pounds of supplies and data from 60 space experiments, Shubhanshu Shukla returns with the Axiom-4 crew.
In addition to returning to Earth on Tuesday, July 15, after nearly 20 days in orbit, Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and his team will also bring some vital data and cargo aboard the Dragon spacecraft. On Monday, the crew of Axiom Mission 4 bid farewell to the International Space Station (ISS) and are almost finished with their voyage to Earth. NASA announced the items the astronauts will bring on board the spacecraft before it returns.
Over 580 pounds of cargo, including NASA hardware and data from over 60 projects, will be transported by the astronauts to Earth. The private astronaut flight was a major turning point for Poland, Hungary, and India. The mission was flown by ISRO's Shubhanshu Shukla under the direction of Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut who is now the Director of Human Spaceflight at Axiom Space.
In addition, two other crew members, Hungarian astronaut Tibor Kapu and Polish project astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, acted as mission specialists. The objective of Axiom mission-4 was to conduct 60 scientific activities and experiments, representing 31 nations globally.
One of the most significant items the astronauts will return to Earth today is data from this study. The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft is scheduled to return to Earth this afternoon after undocking from the ISS Harmony module's space-facing port at 4:45 p.m. IST on Monday. Although 3:01 pm is the anticipated arrival time, Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh had stated that there is a one-hour buffer between these times.
