Unacademy Co-Founders Roman Saini & Gaurav Munjal Exit Firm

Sumit Jain assumes leadership of Unacademy as cash burn reductions and offline expansion take place, while co-founders Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini step down to concentrate on Airlearn.

According to reports, edtech Unacademy's co-founders, Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini, are leaving the company. The Economic Times reported that the two are departing the firm to concentrate on Airlearn, language learning software.

The departure of an edtech company's co-founders is an uncommon occurrence in the Indian startup scene. In June of last year, Unacademy's third co-founder, Hemesh Singh, left the organization.

According to the source, Unacademy's CEO would be Sumit Jain, a co-founder of its subsidiary Graphy. In 2020, he joined Unacademy following the latter's acquisition of his business, Opentalk. Prior to that, he established Commonflor, a real estate platform that Quickr purchased in 2016.

Regarding Unacademy's financial situation, Gaurav Mujal stated in a post on X that the business has a lot of cash on hand and has cut down on its cash burn. According to him, Unacademy's cash burn decreased from about Rs. 1000 crore three years prior to Rs. 400 crore in 2024. According to Munjal, the business wants to reduce its cash burn to Rs. 200 crore this year.

The company's businesses, such as Graphy and PreLadder, generate cash each month, and it has Rs. 1200 crore in banks.

Although offline coaching is more costly than online instruction, Unacademy has prioritized it more in recent years. By the end of this year, 70 percent of Unacademy's offline centers will turn a profit at the center level, according to a post made by Munjal on X in April. Munjal reportedly had board-level approval to leave because he did not want to lead an offline education company, according to a Business Standard article.
