A new data center is now scheduled to be built in Finland as part of TikTok's "Project Clover" EU data separation project, which aims to keep EU user data separate from its Chinese parent company.
This comes just after the company was hit with another significant fine in the EU for data transfers back to China. Project Clover is TikTok's ambitious initiative to establish data centers for European user information inside EU borders in order to guarantee the separation of EU user data in accordance with regional regulations. New data centers in Norway and Ireland have already been activated as part of component Clover, and its Finnish component is expected to add more capacity to protect the privacy of EU user data.
Similar to its "Project Texas" in the United States, TikTok is hoping that Project Clover will comply with legal standards and offer the requisite guarantee that the firm is not sending users' personal information back to China, where it may be given to the Chinese government.
The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) fined the corporation €530 million ($US341 million) earlier this week for violating the European GDPR, which has obvious safeguards on this front.
In addition to vowing to appeal the decision, TikTok has reaffirmed that it has never been asked for or given European user data to Chinese authorities.
Despite its best efforts, TikTok has nonetheless been subject to a number of related sanctions in both Europe and the United States because of worries that its systems are inherently linked to the CCP and might be used for malicious purposes.
