Hyundai Mobis Unveils First EV Battery Tech to Halt Fires

Hyundai Mobis has developed the world’s first cell-level fire extinguishing system to stop thermal runaway in EVs.

Electric vehicle thermal runaway prevention technology is being developed. On the 14th, Hyundai Mobis (KRX 012330) said that it had created a breakthrough technique that could rapidly extinguish a battery cell fire by sprinkling a chemical fire extinguisher. The first strategy to prevent thermal runaway is to prevent heat from transferring to neighboring cells.

In addition to employing heat-resistant materials to postpone thermal runaway, Hyundai Mobis has devised a system to stop it before it starts. Major nations like China, India, and Europe have made it mandatory to postpone thermal runaway for a minimum of five minutes following the battery cell's initial ignition.

Meanwhile, other nations are strengthening their restrictions to stop thermal transfer altogether. As a result, it is anticipated that Hyundai Mobis' battery system assembly (BSA) with cell-level fire extinguishing capability would be the focus of attention as a next-generation safety technology in the worldwide market.

Hyundai Mobis created the BSA, which is made up of a battery management system (BMS), hardware—such as a battery case and fire extinguisher—and software logic that regulates them.

It examines the battery's temperature, voltage, and internal pressure, depending on the real-time data gathered by the sensors to identify any anomalies. The fire extinguishing apparatus is then instructed to start up, and the position for the extinguishing agent spray is set.

The software is made to react to any physical changes that could take place in the battery system with speed and precision. Hyundai Mobis's extremely reliable decision logic includes a redundant algorithm structure and other safety measures.
