Due to recent inclement weather, the Vigo County School Corp. utilized three eLearning days; further eLearning days must be made up after the school year.
The number of weather-related eLearning days that school districts can use annually has been reduced due to a change in state legislation. According to Superintendent Chris Himsel, the district will have to make up any more weather-related closures and add them to the end of the school year.
The district has at least two built-in makeup days for the upcoming school year, but there were none for the current one.
The board's ongoing efforts to guarantee the school corporation's financial stability will consider cash balance targets as they contemplate future strategic planning objectives.
Chief financial officer Donna Wilson informed the board during a pre-regular meeting of the board of finance that the district's interest income increased from $1.65 million in 2023 to over $3.6 million in 2024. The education fund received almost $2.4 million of last year's earnings; some investments from other funds generated extra revenue for those funds.
Wilson and Himsel both pointed out that district costs for curriculum fees and textbook rentals are not entirely covered by state revenue.
