Elon Musk wants Starbase, Texas, to serve as the official ‘gateway to Mars’

The action will allow SpaceX's Starship program to "fundamentally alter humanity’s access to space," according to a SpaceX spokesperson.

In order to establish Starbase, Texas, as the company's headquarters and entryway to Mars, Elon Musk's SpaceX is requesting that a county in the Texas Rio Grande Valley include its launch site as part of the official municipality.

Musk declared in an X post this week that SpaceX's offices will now be located in the city of Starbase, Texas, months after he first announced he was transferring them from California!

Starbase, an unincorporated town in far-south Texas' Cameron County, is the center of much of SpaceX's rocket production, launches, and operations, including the historic rocket capture. The rocket catch is a component of SpaceX's Starship program, which is based in its Starbase facilities and aims to create the first completely reusable rocket that can be used to launch manned trips to the moon and Mars in order to establish human presence.

However, SpaceX claims that Starbase, Texas, must become an official location before it can reach Mars.

In a letter to Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, Starbase general manager Kathryn Lueders stated that the town must be able to expand in order to continue to build the workforce required to quickly design and produce Starship. For this reason, they are asking Cameron County to hold an election so that Starbase may become the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley.

In Texas, a county judge must call a special election in the community before a town may become a city. Lueders claims that integrating Starbase will expedite the process of transforming Starbase into a top-notch living environment and allow the Starship program to significantly transform humankind's access to space.

In July, Musk said that SpaceX will be relocating its previous headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase. California's SAFETY Act, which forbids schools from asking instructors to inform parents if their child identifies as transgender, was the justification Musk gave for the action.

This is the last straw; Musk stated on X. SpaceX will now relocate its headquarters from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas, due to this law and several others that came before it that target both families and businesses.
