Google tests out A.I. tools

Google is testing a product that uses artificial intelligence technology to generate news stories, according to several people with knowledge of the matter.

According to multiple individuals familiar with the situation, Google is testing a product that employs artificial intelligence technology to generate news stories. The company is proposing the product to news organizations like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and News Corp., the owner of The Wall Street Journal. Speaking anonymously to discuss the concept, the person claimed that the tool, internally referred to as Genesis, can take in information (such as specifics of current events) and generate news material.

According to one of the three people with knowledge of the product, Google saw it as an intelligent technology that could help steer the world of publishing away from the pitfalls of generative artificial intelligence (AI). The company thought the technology could act as a sort of personalized assistant for journalists, executing some tasks while opening up time for others. After seeing Google's pitch, a few executives expressed discomfort and asked to remain anonymous in order to discuss sensitive information. According to two users, it appeared to undervalue the work required to create factual and visually appealing news articles.

In a statement, Google spokesperson Jenn Crider stated that the company is now in the early phases of investigating concepts to potentially offer AI-enabled tools to support its journalists in their jobs in collaboration with news publishers, particularly smaller publications.
