DOD is utilizing emerging technology

Mara E. Karlin, deputy undersecretary of defense for policy, highlighted the importance of the Department of Defense's technology adoption for the US military's advantage.

In her capacity as deputy undersecretary of defense for policy, Mara E. Karlin stated that the US military's long-term military edge depends heavily on DOD's capacity to spur innovation and widespread adoption of important technology. Karlin claimed that the department's projected fiscal year 2024 budget, which allots $170 billion for procurement and $145 billion for research and development, is a glaring example of its dedication to being at the forefront of the field. According to Karlin, the department's capacity to use the resources of its allies and its investments in cutting-edge technology is essential for averting and deterring future hostilities.

The strategy, she continued, is fully consistent with the 2022 U.S. National Defense Strategy, which forces DOD to quicken innovation and technology adoption in order to strengthen its military edge.

Karlin stated that the Department of Defense is "bringing emerging capabilities to fruition" in addition to making targeted expenditures in tested technology. Karlin stated that the DOD is implementing institutional changes to lower obstacles to rapidly fielding new capabilities in order to stay on the cutting edge of these developing technologies.

Karlin cited the announcement made by DOD Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks last month that the replicator initiative will see thousands of autonomous systems deployed across several domains in the next 18 to 24 months.
