Apple is testing a display-free wearable with advanced sensors, targeting users who want focused health tracking without traditional smartwatch distractions.
Apple is reportedly working on an Apple Screenless Fitness Tracker that could take the company deeper into the growing market for health-focused wearables. Unlike the Apple Watch, the reported device would have no display, apps, or typical smartwatch features. Instead, it would focus mainly on tracking health and fitness.
The proposal has been under consideration by Apple for several months now and prototypes have already been developed. The development process is ongoing, but Apple has not yet decided whether the product is going to be brought to market remain uncertain. Even if the proposal is accepted, the release of such a device will take place no earlier than 2028.
What could Apple’s screenless fitness tracker look like?
The early prototypes are reportedly built around a thin fabric band with a small computing module containing sensors. Without a screen, the device could collect health and activity data while keeping the experience much simpler than an Apple Watch.
That approach would put the product closer to dedicated fitness trackers such as Whoop and Oura. These devices have built strong user bases by focusing on health data rather than notifications, apps, calls and other smartwatch functions. Garmin also has products aimed at users who want fitness tracking without relying heavily on a display.
For Apple, the move could create a new option between traditional fitness bands and the full Apple Watch experience. Users interested mainly in tracking activity and health could have a smaller device, while Apple Watch would continue serving people looking for broader smartwatch features.
Why is Apple looking at a screenless wearable now?
Apple has been expanding its health features across its products, making a dedicated tracker a possible next step. Recent Apple Watch models include more detailed heart-rate tracking and readiness-related measurements, while Apple's Health app can use collected data to provide additional healthcare insights.
The company has also been placing greater attention on making health information easier to understand. Services chief Eddy Cue is now involved in Apple's health efforts and is reportedly pushing for a more focused approach to health and fitness products.
The project also comes as Apple reshapes parts of its wearable business. Jeff Williams retired at the end of last year, while Stan Ng and Jay Blahnik also left after holding important roles connected to Apple Watch marketing and fitness.
Apple is reportedly considering several other wearable products as well. Smart glasses and AirPods with cameras are expected to receive attention in the coming years, while an AI pendant project has reportedly been delayed.
For now, the Apple Screenless Fitness Tracker remains an internal project rather than a confirmed product. Its design, features and even its future could change before Apple makes a final decision. If development continues, the reported 2028 timeline suggests the company is taking its time to determine whether a screen-free device has a clear place alongside the Apple Watch.
Thus, Business Fortune believes that Apple’s screenless fitness tracker could broaden its health portfolio while creating a simpler wearable experience for users.
