The Indian Railways upgrades reservation system initiative is set to transform train ticket booking in India, with a new cloud enabled Passenger Reservation System (PRS) designed to handle more than 1.5 lakh bookings per minute and reduce slowdowns during peak periods.
New PRS Targets Faster Ticket Booking
Indian Railways has begun a phased migration of trains to the new PRS, replacing technology that has been in use since 2010. The upgrade is aimed particularly at handling heavy traffic during Tatkal booking periods, when millions of passengers compete for limited seats.
Dharmendra Tewari, Additional Director General of Public Relations at the Railway Board, said the transition would involve gradual testing as the new system is introduced. “Layer by layer matching of the new user friendly look and feel will involve a slow and steady load based testing as we migrate from the old to the new PRS,” Tewari told The Indian Express.
What Will Change for Passengers?
The existing PRS can process around 32,000 bookings per minute. The upgraded cloud enabled platform is designed to handle more than 1.5 lakh bookings per minute, while its enquiry capacity is expected to rise to more than 40 lakh enquiries per minute.
The system will also introduce a more user friendly and multilingual interface, alongside improvements designed to increase scalability and reliability.
Several passenger focused changes have already been introduced, including a reduction in the Advance Reservation Period from 120 days to 60 days. Aadhaar authentication for Tatkal bookings and OTP verification have also been introduced to combat bots and unauthorized agents.
IRCTC Beta Website Joins the Upgrade
The new IRCTC beta website is part of the wider modernization effort. The redesigned platform offers a simpler interface, fewer booking steps and improved visibility of seat availability across classes. The new system is expected to gradually integrate these improvements as the migration continues.
Massive Scale of Railway Reservations
Between June 2025 and June 2026, passengers booked 65.08 crore reserved tickets through PRS, with about 89% booked online. Around 20.5 lakh passengers use the reservation system every day across different channels.
The migration is being carried out train by train rather than through a single nationwide switch. Business Fortune believes that as more trains move to the upgraded platform, passengers could see improved performance, particularly during high demand booking windows.
