ECI Bankipur bypoll counting shows Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor taking an early lead over BJP's Neeraj Kumar Sinha in a closely watched contest.

ECI Bankipur Bypoll Results: Prashant Kishor Takes Early Lead over BJP

The ECI Bankipur bypoll counting has emerged as one of the most closely watched political events in Bihar, with Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor taking an early lead over BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha. According to counting trends after the fourth round, Kishor secured 6,269 votes, leading Sinha, who polled 5,124 votes by 1,145 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Gupta remained a distant third with 884 votes.

Counting Underway Amid Tight Security

Counting of votes began at 8 AM at AN College, Patna, under heavy security arrangements. Election officials have scheduled 31 rounds of counting to determine the winner among 26 candidates contesting the by election.

The Bankipur constituency has remained a BJP stronghold since 1995, making this contest particularly significant for both the ruling party and the newly formed Jan Suraaj Party.

Why the Bankipur By election Matters?

The bypoll was needed after BJP national president Nitin Nabin vacated the Assembly seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha in April.

The BJP chose youth leader Neeraj Kumar Sinha as its candidate, whereas the RJD re nominated Rekha Gupta, who finished behind Nitin Nabin by more than 50,000 votes in the last Assembly election. The polling, conducted on July 30, recorded a voter turnout of 34.30%, lower than the 41.45% turnout registered during the previous Assembly election.

Prashant Kishor Alleges Poll Irregularities

Hours before counting commenced, Prashant Kishor accused the Patna Police of attempting to influence the by election. During a late night press conference, he alleged that campaign workers had been illegally detained and that voters faced intimidation.

He announced that Jan Suraaj would approach both the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Supreme Court over the alleged irregularities.

"The BJP will lose the by election by such a wide margin that it will forget the saying that it can field even a cat or a dog and still win the election." , said Prashant Kishor.

What Happens Next?

With several rounds of counting still remaining, the contest is far from over. Business Fortune believes the final outcome could reshape Bihar's political landscape ahead of future elections, especially if Jan Suraaj succeeds in winning the Bankipur seat from the BJP after nearly three decades.
