Meta buys AI-wearable startup Limitless to accelerate its vision of personal superintelligence and expand its growing ecosystem of smart devices.
Limitless the AI startup behind a pendant-style wearable that can record conversations and produce summaries using AI has been purchased by Meta. Dan Siroker CEO of Limitless confirmed the acquisition in a corporate blog post. The deal's financial conditions were not made public.
According to the CEO of Limitless Meta's expanding goal is to bring personal superintelligence to all individuals, a future in which wearables with AI capabilities will be essential. Limitless will be working with Meta to help achieve this aim.
The pendant from Limitless which launched in 2024 at a starting price of around $99 was created to increase productivity by recording conversations and using generative AI to create short summaries that make it easier for users to remember meetings or review earlier exchanges.
Meta has strengthened its push into AI-based devices with the purchase of Limitless. Under Mark Zuckerberg's leadership Meta has been expanding its product line beyond smartphones. The unexpected success of the Ray-Ban AI glasses which include a built-in camera and voice-based AI assistance has increased confidence in developing a larger ecosystem of intelligent gadgets.
Meta continues to make huge investments in hardware development despite the uneven results of its bigger objectives such as the Metaverse. Recent hires like a poplar designer from a competitive tech giant show a dedication to improving the upcoming generation of AI-powered products.
Meta is not the only company exploring wearable AI; a number of startups including Friend, Plaud and Bee which Amazon recently purchased are developing comparable gadgets. However now that Limitless is under its control Meta is ready to take the lead in expanding the market for wearables that record conversations.
