Business Fortune: Apple AI Chief Robby Walker Exits

Robby Walker, Apple’s senior AI executive, is leaving as the company faces pressure over delayed AI products and falling behind rivals like Google and Meta.

According to persons with knowledge of the situation, Bloomberg News announced on Friday that Robby Walker, one of Apple's top artificial intelligence executives, is departing the company. Walker's departure coincides with worries that Apple is missing out on what may be the largest expansion wave in the industry in decades due to its cautious approach to AI.

The long-awaited AI update for Siri has been postponed until next year, and the business was sluggish to release its Apple Intelligence suite, which included ChatGPT integration. Since April of this year, Walker has served as the senior director of the Answers, Information, and Knowledge division of the iPhone manufacturer. His LinkedIn page states that he joined Apple in 2013.

According to the article, he intends to depart Apple next month. Before software Chief Craig Federighi took over Siri's management earlier this year, Walker was in charge of the voice assistant. Many of Apple's AI executives have recently left the company to work for Meta Platforms. According to a July Bloomberg report, Ruoming Pang, Apple's top executive responsible for AI models, is on the list.

Mark Lee and Tom Gunter, two more Apple AI researchers who collaborated closely with Pang, have also joined Meta's Superintelligence Labs team. According to a March Bloomberg story, CEO Tim Cook no longer has faith in AI head John Giannandrea's capacity to carry out product development; therefore, Mike Rockwell, vice president in charge of the Vision Products Group, will oversee the Siri virtual assistant.
