Business Fortune: Oracle CSO Exit Amid Restructuring

Oracle’s longtime Chief Security Officer Mary Ann Davidson, who served nearly 40 years, is stepping down amid the company’s recent layoffs and restructuring efforts.

Oracle Corp. is changing significantly, and not simply in terms of employment. According to a source, the computer giant is now firing Chief Security Officer Mary Ann Davidson, one of its most well-known and longest-serving executives, after she worked there for almost 40 years. As reported by Bloomberg, Davidson’s departure comes in the wake of Oracle’s recent job cuts and corporate restructuring. Oracle recently announced that it was laying off employees as part of its cost-cutting measures in the face of significant investments in AI technology.

Many in the security world were taken aback by her decision to leave the company because, according to the story, she had been there for roughly 40 years and was well-known in the field for her support of Oracle's product security. Davidson joined Oracle in 1988 after serving as a civil engineer in the US Navy. Although Oracle did not formally announce her exit, a June filing revealed that Senior Vice President Robert Duhart, previously Walmart Inc.’s chief information security officer, is now responsible for daily cybersecurity operations.

Davidson served as a key security advisor to Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison for many years. In a 2002 interview with Businessweek, she discussed the difficulties in ensuring that the company's products met Ellison's marketing campaign, which hailed the products as "unbreakable." The former chief security officer was also a strong supporter of Oracle's product security, having led the creation of industry-standard procedures and systems for examining the company's code for flaws and defending the products against hackers.
