Comma Compliance open-sources WhatsApp and Signal capture tools for secure, transparent message archiving and compliance.
The real-time WhatsApp and Signal capture tools' open-source code was released by Comma Compliance on GitHub. Businesses can either use Comma’s ready-made service to securely archive messages or choose to review, customize, and host the WhatsApp and Signal capture tools themselves. Neither Signal nor WhatsApp recommends either connector.
The announcement coincides with broker-dealers reviewing their communications compliance stacks in the wake of the highly publicized TeleMessage hack in May 2025. Attackers gained access to plaintext messages by taking advantage of several flaws, which increased the need for independently verifiable capture tools. This demonstrates Comma's dedication to creating compliance tools that gain credibility via openness.
According to Jeremiah Church, CEO of Comma Compliance, by making their WhatsApp and Signal capture tools public, they encourage scrutiny and cooperation, increasing the accessibility of compliance software. In RegTech, transparency ought to be the rule rather than the exception. Comma's messaging capture technology ensures that messages remain encrypted from device to connector by providing end-to-end encrypted capture, which complies with SEC and FINRA rules.
The platform has open, inspectable capture logic and receipts that attest to the integrity and completeness of messages. Based on open-source licenses (Signal under GNU GPL v3 and WhatsApp under Apache License 2.0), businesses can use Comma's extensive SaaS tooling for a smooth deployment or self-host with complete source code access to avoid vendor lock-in. Comma helps financial organizations by decreasing decision fatigue, preparing them for audits, and motivating them to work smarter, not harder.
