Stargate, the $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative backed by SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle, is considering UK expansion amid growing interest in Europe.
The Financial Times reported on Thursday that Stargate, a $500 billion U.S. data center project financed by SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle, opens a new tab, and is considering future investment in the UK as it looks at foreign countries to build out AI infrastructure.
In an effort to establish the UK as an AI superpower, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to approach legislation in a pro-innovation manner, provide academics with access to public data, and establish data center zones.
According to FT, which cited people familiar with the situation, these initiatives to increase data centers' access to electricity have drawn the project's interest in addition to Germany and France, which have also become appealing candidates.
SoftBank and OpenAI reiterated Stargate's commitment to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure over the next four years in a joint statement to Reuters. In February, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, indicated that his organization might be interested in implementing a Stargate-style AI program in Europe.
In January, President Donald Trump of the USA declared the Stargate project, a private sector initiative intending to fund AI infrastructural development to outpace rival countries. As a result, investment interest in the AI sector has surged in the last few years due to the increased adoption of chatbots and high-level AI agents.
