DOGE Launches GSAi Chatbot to Assist 1,500 Federal Workers

Tasks are being automated by Elon Musk's DOGE team as it continues to reduce the number of federal employees.

1,500 government employees at the General Services Administration are now using a proprietary chatbot named GSAi, which was implemented by Elon Musk's purported Department of Government Efficiency. The decision to automate formerly human-performed operations coincides with DOGE's ongoing federal staff purging.

GSAi is designed to assist with general chores, similar to commercial applications like Claude from Anthropic or ChatGPT. According to a GSA employee, it is designed in a way that makes it safe for government usage. Eventually, the DOGE team intends to utilize it for procurement and contract data analysis.

DOGE conducted a preliminary test of the chatbot with 150 GSA customers in February. According to two people with knowledge of the situation, it intends to eventually roll out the product over the whole agency. Although the chatbot has been in development for a few months, its deployment timeframe has been significantly expedited by new agency leadership connected to DOGE.

Recently, both the Treasury and the Department of Health and Human Services have contemplated using a GSA chatbot in their internal and external contact centers. Whether such a chatbot would be GSAi is unknown. According to an earlier story, the US Army is utilizing a generative AI tool called CamoGPT in other parts of the government to find and eliminate references to diversity, equality, inclusion, and accessibility from training materials.
