NetApp Targets 50% Emission Cut for Greener Data Centers

Given that AI continues to generate large data center energy usage, NetApp pledges to cut its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions in half by 2030 following SBTi approval.

Due in large part to the computational demands of AI and machine learning models, data centers presently use 1–1.5 percent of the world's power. Technology companies are under pressure to lower emissions while satisfying the rising demand for computer resources as a result of this spike in power usage. According to data analysts, if nothing is done, data center energy consumption might triple by 2030.

In light of this, as technology companies worldwide attempt to address growing energy demands, data storage and enterprise management company NetApp has received approval from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI) for plans to reduce its emissions by 50%.

As processing power needs rise, the emergence of AI applications has raised scrutiny of technology companies and their effects on the environment.

SBTi responds by offering impartial confirmation of business emissions reduction goals. More than 10,000 businesses have accepted objectives for the organization, which serves as a baseline for evaluating sustainability projects.

To handle growing data volumes and keep energy expenses under control, enterprise clients are now looking for sustainability solutions. NetApp claims that its strategy of fusing environmental concerns with consumer advantages was motivated by customer input to provide improved environmental objectives.
