Russia's new gaming consoles and Fog Play cloud service challenge global leaders PlayStation and Xbox.
In a move to bolster technological self-reliance, Russia is stepping into the gaming industry with its own consoles powered by the Elbrus processor and a cloud gaming platform, Fog Play. These initiatives stem from President Vladimir Putin's directive to create domestic gaming hardware and platforms amid international sanctions.
The Elbrus-powered gaming console, developed by the Moscow Center of SPARC Technologies, operates on Aurora or Alt Linux systems. On a parallel track, telecom giant MTS has launched Fog Play, a $45-per-month cloud gaming platform allowing users to rent computing power from high-performance PCs.
While these efforts signify innovation, officials acknowledge significant hurdles. Anton Gorelkin, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, admitted that the Elbrus-based console lags far behind global competitors like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. The Elbrus processor, originally intended for defense and infrastructure, lacks the advanced gaming performance seen in Intel, AMD, and Arm chips.
Despite these limitations, Russia's focus remains clear: fostering domestic game development rather than porting global gaming hits. This strategy is part of a broader push to reduce dependence on Western technology.
Although achieving true technological sovereignty in gaming is a steep climb, these initiatives mark Russia’s resolve to innovate in the face of global challenges. Whether they’ll find their footing against global giants remains to be seen, but the ambition is undeniable.
