Despite Elon Musk's assertions that X is hitting new usage records every other month and that the app is still an essential connector; the most recent data indicates that user interest in Elon's X project is declining. This is often due to Musk's own contentious remarks within the app.
New information indicates that while Musk has persisted in double down on his political positions, X has witnessed a sharp drop in users in the U.S. and the U.K. in recent months.
Musk said last month that "civil war is inevitable" in the U.K. after reports of racial rioting, which appears to have caused a withdrawal of U.K. users from the app.
According to an FT analysis, Similarweb data indicates that the number of active daily users in the UK has decreased from 8 million a year ago to just about 5.6 million at this time, with over one-third of that decline occurring since the summer riots. This phenomenon is not limited to regions like Brazil where the platform has been prohibited. The number of active users on X in the US has decreased by around a fifth during the same 16-month period.
Additionally, that is consistent with X's own reporting on its user base in the EU. X must regularly report on its EU user base and the number of active users it serves in the area as part of its reporting requirements to the EU. According to X's most recent report, which covered the first half of 2024, the number of users decreased by 5%.
In addition to losing subscribers in its main countries, X is still blocked in Brazil, where it has 20 million more users (though that restrictioEUn could be removed this week).
