On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled a brand-new interface for using ChatGPT that it calls "canvas." The software creates a place to work for writing & coding tasks in a new window that opens next to the standard chat window.
Users may write directly on the canvas or use code, then highlight certain areas of their work and let the model make edits.
Some consumer Writing tools AI companies are coming together around customizable workspaces as a useful use of generative AI. ChatGPT's new UI has features that are comparable to Anthropic's June release of Artifacts and Cursor, the well-liked companion app for AI coding tools. Even if AI chatbots nowadays aren't able to do complex tasks with only one instruction, they may frequently provide a useful beginning point. Editable workspaces, such as Canvas, let users make corrections to incorrect portions of an AI chatbot's output without requiring them to carefully examine their prompt and write a new section of code.
Daniel Levine product manager of Open AI remarked that this is merely a more natural interface for engaging with ChatGPT.
Levine had to choose "GPT-4o with canvas" from ChatGPT's model selector drop-down menu to participate in their demo. However, according to OpenAI, ChatGPT Canvas will only display windows when it determines that having a separate workspace may be useful—for example, for lengthy outputs or intricate coding jobs. Levine demonstrated how writing emails may be aided by ChatGPT's new features. An email generated by ChatGPT can be requested by users, and it will appear within the canvas window.
The coding canvas has a few somewhat distinct features. Levine gave ChatGPT instructions to launch a Python API web server, which materialized on the canvas window. ChatGPT allows users to contribute in-line documentation explaining the code in simple terms by clicking the "add comments" button.
Once Canvas is out of testing, OpenAI says it aims to give the tool to free members as well.
