OSOM closure

The phone firm OSOM Products, which sprang in 2020 from the ashes of Essential, is shutting down. After obtaining access to an internal statement from CEO Jason Keats, Android Authority broke the story first.

With intentions to introduce a phone that prioritizes privacy, OSOM has always had a challenging path ahead of it. The business also had legal issues, just like Essential did before it, including a lawsuit brought by a former employee who claimed financial mismanagement.

The business, on the other hand, succeeded in releasing a mobile device—just not the first-party phone that it had previously revealed. Instead, the business provided technology to a Solana device that was web3-focused.

It was successful for OSOM to launch a product under its own brand. In essence, the OSOM Privacy Cable is a USB cord with the ability to block data transfer in environments where "juice jackers" may be present.

CEO Jason Keats confirmed to reporters in a statement that OSOM is regretfully closing and that the news published in Android Authority was accurate. Despite concerted attempts, OSOM chose to move on to a different project in May 2024 after realizing that they were not receiving any orders for mobile phones. In order to lower our burn rate at the time, he continued, OSOM was compelled to let go of a number of personnel.

It seems that the "new project" is a reference to the "AI-powered camera" it intended to deliver as a sequel to its unannounced smartphone. Keats had reportedly tried to sell the company to HP but had not been successful in negotiating a contract.
