OpenAI might be planning to enter the search market and take on Google and Bing, in addition to upstarts like Perplexity with its Google competitor, the SearchGPT.
The business debuted SearchGPT on Thursday; it's a search function that pulls information from the internet to provide "timely answers" to queries. In terms of user interface, SearchGPT is similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot platform. After entering a search query, SearchGPT displays images and text from the internet, along with connections to similar sources. From there, you can ask more questions or look through other, related searches in a sidebar.
Certain searches consider where you are. According to a support document from OpenAI, SearchGPT "collects and shares" generic location data with other search providers in order to enhance the precision of results (such as displaying a list of neighboring eateries or the current weather). Additionally, users of SearchGPT can share more accurate location data by using a toggle in the options menu.
Launched today for "a small group" of users and publications, SearchGPT, which OpenAI refers to as a prototype, is powered by OpenAI models, especially GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and GPT-4o. This is where the waitlist is. According to OpenAI, there are future plans to include some SearchGPT functions in ChatGPT.
In a blog post, OpenAI noted that searching the web for information may be quite time-consuming and that it frequently takes several tries to find relevant results. OpenAI thinks that by adding real-time web data to their models' conversational skills, users will be able to locate what they're seeking more quickly and easily.
