The latest beta of Android 15 is now available from Google. This release brings the platform closer to stability, so developers can start testing their apps with this nearly final version of the APIs.
Although not much appears to have changed since the last beta release, there are still a few fascinating details waiting to be uncovered.
In a blog post revealing the most recent beta, Google highlights one significant enhancement to the passkey UI. With the integration of the biometric input screen and the Google Password Manager prompt for using a passkey, utilizing a passkey with biometric authentication now only requires one step, as opposed to two. The dropdown choices in the text field and keyboard allow you to access additional fallback alternatives in case you inadvertently bypass the passkey prompt.
Even as Android 15 gets closer to its final version, it seems like there's still more to discover. Mishaal Rahman, an Android expert, discovered that the system could potentially detect when a biometric model is not functioning correctly, deactivate it automatically, and prompt you to re-enroll. Naturally, you could do this manually for now, but the idea of a biometric redo improving performance might not be well known. Rahman notes that several factors influence the performance of a biometric model, and frequent reenrollment effectively resolves issues that may arise from a flawed model.
