Because fixing this can be highly expensive, it is advisable to avoid it as much as possible. If logistics are not handled correctly, your company’s reputation will also suffer.

Transportation and logistics are crucial because they guarantee that goods are delivered to clients on schedule and in acceptable shape. They are also essential in bringing down the total cost of goods and services. Expanding the customer base and entering new markets can help logistics and transportation companies grow their business.

The following excerpts have been taken from an interview with Steve Huntley, the President and Founder of Resource Logistics Group, Inc.

Q. What is Resource Logistics Group’s story? Why did you decide to start a company in the trucking and logistics sector?

We started in 2009 as SCML Logistics (Supply Chains Made Logical) to serve various clients. In 2018, we updated our name to Resource Logistics Group, Inc. (RLG), as this best represents our business as we are a “Resource” for our clients to utilize for all “back office” logistics management functions.

I have a deep background in logistics and supply chain management, concentrating on negotiating transportation contracts and pricing. My team and I also have in-depth knowledge of analyzing all types of transportation data and looking for ways to reduce transportation costs for all modes of transportation.

After 15 years of working in the corporate world, I realized that my team and I have skills that could assist companies in reducing their transportation expenses. We have helped our clients save over $185 million on transportation costs since we started our business. Most importantly, our clients have not seen a degradation in service from their chosen suppliers.

Q. How is Resource Logistics Group revolutionizing the business logistics sector?

RLG is NOT a typical third-party logistics company (3PL). We are NOT a middleman between our clients and their carriers. We allow our clients to have their contracts and pricing directly with their carrier partners. A typical 3PL usually has the pricing and agreements between them and the carriers, and then they “resell” these rates at a markup of anywhere from 10 to 35%. We don’t believe in that model, as we like our clients to have direct relationships with their carriers. We also do not handle day-to-day operations for clients; our clients manage their own shipments and choose the carriers that serve them best based on the agreements that we help them negotiate.

Q. What are the different types of services Resource Logistics Group offers?

The different services we offer are as follows. These are what we call “back office” logistics management and support, as this does not involve day-to-day management of shipments:

  1. Benchmarking of current transportation contracts, pricing, and accessorial charges.

  2. Managing the complete bidding/RFQ process for all modes of transportation. We also help to implement the new contracts and pricing that we and our clients negotiate with their chosen carrier partners.

  3. Assist our clients with managing their transportation contracts and pricing once they are in place.

  4. Monthly logistical reporting to our clients so that they can see where they are spending their money and also look for ways to further reduce transportation expenditures.

  5. We offer a full Transportation Management System (TMS) to our clients at a very low cost.

  6. We offer freight invoicing issue resolution to our clients when carriers are not billing properly based on the contracts and pricing that we helped negotiate.

  7. We offer freight claim management services for our clients.

  8. All types of logistics analysis and reporting go above and beyond basic monthly reporting.

Q. What are the reasons for clients to choose to work with Resource Logistics Group over its rivals?

Our clients choose us because we allow them to have their transportation contracts and agreements directly with their carriers. They know what the true price is for moving their product. Many clients also like to handle their own day-to-day operations, and our system allows that to happen.

Our clients are keen on the reporting that we perform for them monthly. Before they engaged with RLG, they did not take the time to really understand their data and were not able to turn it into “information.” RLG does that for clients in simple-to-use dashboards that are shared with senior level management at each client. Our clients also enjoy the transparency and direct engagement that we offer, so they can get to the point and start saving money right away on their transportation expenditures.

Q. What were some of the most memorable challenges you and the team at Resource Logistics Group have overcome? How did the company learn from these challenges?

One challenge that we remember is that of implementing a TMS system for a client in less than 6 weeks. The challenge with this was that 90% of this client’s transportation spend was for inbound raw materials, dealing with over 600 suppliers. So not only did we have to train the 4 logistics specialists with the client, we had to train over 600 suppliers and their personnel on how to use the TMS in less than 6 weeks.

We learned a lot from this experience, and it helped us put some solid SOPs in place for TMS implementation.

Q. What are Resource Logistics Group’s plans for the future?

We will continue to grow by offering our services to new clients.

We are also in the process of licensing our proprietary LTL Bid Software to clients and 3PLs. This software is the fastest platform in the world for LTL bid analysis. We are able to complete a full analysis of new pricing in hours and NOT days or weeks. This helps our clients to be able to implement the new pricing faster and more seamlessly.
