The match was tied at 2-2 and de Miguel was running towards the ball around the halfway line when he was hit by Owono who was rushing out of his area to clear the ball. Medics tried to resuscitate the forward for over five minutes. As players from both teams were waving frantically for help to arrive, he was taken away by an ambulance. However, the Irish Times stated that his pulse was brought back but Owono was shown a straight red card and the match was cancelled.

Tenerife’s statement

The club issued a statement saying he was suffering from a "serious but stable" condition. However, they updated their statement early Tuesday saying he was suffering from neurological problems. Unfortunately they then added "with great sadness and great pain in our hearts" confirming that de Miguel had sadly passed away.

Police investigation

Spanish Police have opened an investigation into potential involuntary manslaughter. However, the lead prosecutor for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Jose Luis Sanchez-Jauregui, said that criminal charges were unlikely as the incident occurred during the game, reports Reuters.
