The shift from consulting to a corporate role brings changes in daily routines, travel, workplace perks and personal time, including greater freedom to exercise and meet friends.

Jahnvi Singh’s move from McKinsey to Google has changed how she works, travels and spends her time outside the office. The IIM Calcutta graduate, who left management consulting for the technology giant a year ago, has shared how the transition affected her work responsibilities, workplace benefits, fitness routine and social life. In an Instagram video, Singh compared her experiences at both companies, highlighting the differences between consulting and corporate roles.

How Did Her Work Change After Joining Google?

As a consultant at McKinsey, Singh was working on various clients from different sectors facing varied business issues. However, while the consultancy gave her variety in projects, the work kept on changing between projects.

She deals with one business only at Google, which helps her gain more industry knowledge. Yet, at the same time, she admitted that working with the same business can become boring after a while. She showed that there is an important distinction between consulting and corporate careers: consulting gives diversity in problem solving, while the in-house jobs give consistency.

Google vs McKinsey: Travel and Employee Benefits

Another point where travel formed a significant part of the contrast was her professional life. Being a part of McKinsey gave her chances of travelling back and forth between Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Delhi. But now being in Google’s Gurugram branch, she does not travel much within the country but gets an opportunity for international travels around twice or thrice a year.

Comparison between the employee benefits of the two firms was also undertaken by Singh. In case of McKinsey, she received five star hotel accommodation while on consulting projects and related dinner parties.

Google provides commuting facilities such as office pickup/drop service, as well as cafeteria offering healthy food choices. Her story shows that employee benefits depend on the corporate culture and working pattern of the employees.

Google Work-Life Balance: What Changed for Singh?

The major change that has been experienced by her is the balance between her life and work. It has not been easy for her to exercise regularly and make plans for herself on weekdays because she was involved in consulting services.

She revealed that she exercises five times a week, takes 8,000 steps each day and can now make plans with her friends without needing anyone's approval most weekdays. Her experiences clearly demonstrate why work-life balance in consulting is something that needs to be considered by professionals when making a decision to change their career paths. Although the salary, designation and professional development matter, the personal life may have an impact on career satisfaction too.

The transition of Singh does not mean that either of the two companies is superior to each other. Rather, it serves as an example to show how different career options provide different benefits. These include diversity in clientele, more business knowledge and flexibility in one’s schedule.

Thus, Business Fortune believes that the right career move is one that balances professional growth, meaningful work, and a fulfilling personal life.
