Samuel Monroe Jr., the actor who starred in the 90s cult classics Menace II Society, Tales from the Hood and The Players Club has passed away at the age of 52.
Samuel Monroe Jr. succumbed to meningitis and its severe complications. Monroe died at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, his wife, Shawna Stewart announced. She also revealed that Monroe was placed on life support having suffered from severe complications from meningitis.
Shawna Stewart Pays Tribute to Her Husband
Monroe’s wife, Shawna Stewart, paid tribute to the late actor, saying he was a fighter while in the hospital.
“Your journey on earth may be over, but your light will forever shine”, Stewart wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday. She also mentioned that her husband battled numerous health challenges for months after his meningitis diagnosis, which was mismanaged.
Monroe’s mother, Joyce Patton, also confirmed his passing in a Facebook post, saying that God beckoned him and thanked people for praying and being there at the family’s side.
Remembering His ’90s Film Career
Monroe started his career in 1993, starring in the television film Out All Night with Patti LaBelle. He had his film debut the same year in Menace II Society.
He then went on to star in other 90s classic films including Tales from the Hood, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, Set It Off and The Players Club. Monroe continued to act in subsequent years, most recently appearing in the 2023 films Packz and Payment Received. His latest work was the comedy Extra’d Out.
A Difficult Health Battle
According to his wife, Stewart, Monroe contracted meningitis while in Las Vegas. She also mentioned that they sought treatment in numerous facilities after his meningitis diagnosis was mismanaged. The infection was left untreated for eight months before it was properly addressed. However, the infection’s effects were permanently damaging.
Monroe was placed on life support after losing motor function of several body parts, experiencing seizures and swelling of the brain.
In addition, family members launched a GoFundMe page to help pay for his medical and family needs in April.
