New battery storage investments are reshaping Michigan’s energy landscape, but challenges remain as demand and renewable adoption accelerate.

Canadian Solar’s e-Storage subsidiary is expanding BESS projects in Michigan by supplying a 75MW/381MWh battery energy storage system to Apex Clean Energy’s Coldwater Solar facility in Branch County. The project highlights the rapid growth of battery storage projects across the US as utilities prepare for rising electricity demand, renewable integration, and the retirement of traditional power sources.

Michigan Battery Storage Project Moves Forward

e-Storage will provide its SolBank 3.0 BESS solution, power conversion systems, and EQ-S energy management platform. Deliveries are expected to begin in early 2027, with commercial operation planned for mid-2027.

The Coldwater project supports Michigan’s goal of adding 2,500MW of energy storage capacity by 2030 while helping address future grid reliability concerns as coal plants retire through 2032.

Major BESS Projects Expand Across US

The growth of BESS projects is accelerating beyond Michigan. Spearmint Energy secured a $325 million expanded debt facility to advance multiple battery storage developments, including the Tierra Seca, Seven Flags, and Revolution projects.

OCI Energy also closed approximately $130 million in tax equity financing for its 120MW/480MWh Alamo City BESS project in Texas, featuring four-hour storage capability for enhanced grid flexibility.

Key Highlights

  • Coldwater BESS capacity reaches 75MW/381MWh

  • e-Storage delivers advanced SolBank 3.0 technology

  • Michigan targets 2,500MW storage by 2030

  • US battery investments continue expanding rapidly
